Habitat Restoration
Beyond the obvious destruction of natural areas through building neighborhoods, there is also a loss of native plants which host insects. Without insects, of course, we lose birds. But insects need more than flowers, they need plants that can host eggs and provide protection. The only plants that provide significant value in this way are the native plants. Unfortunately, ornamental and invasive plants are common used in landscaping for their aesthetics over their contribution to the ecosystem. At scale, we are slowly creating a desert for insects.
You can see this having an effect at this wetland. Compared to 10 years ago, there are fewer bugs, fewer swallows, fewer bats, and the list goes on. Of topmost priority, we are focused on increasing the quantity and variety of native plants to build back the insect and bird populations.
